A mythic tale of adventure, suspense and self-discovery, acted out upon a landscape divided between the fast-paced, bounded environment of a modern day basketball court and a terrifying, primal locale governed by ancient legend, tribal ritual and predatory enemies.
Basketball-hero-wannabe, Nick Crandall yearns to play first string. But the fourteen-year-old eighth grade student at Grant Junior High School has to come up with a plan; he’s been caught skipping math class, thus excluded from the team. Nick needs a sign-off from his math teacher, Old Man Wheeler if he is to be reinstated, thus able to play the first game on Thursday night. Wheeler, a tough ex-marine, wounded and crippled in Afghanistan, takes a dim view of students goofing off. It won’t be easy for Nick to get a pass from him.
Nick’s growing agitation, heightened by parent and teacher expectations, school rules, his own limitations, and especially the dilemma of fellow teammate and friend, Ryan Jensen, who has been suspended from school and arrested (unjustly, Nick believes) for assaulting a school bully, pushes Nick’s frustration tolerance over the top.
Then it happens. Nick is suddenly overwhelmed and jettisoned out of his familiar surroundings by a mysterious red mist, which transports him to an exotic land, peopled by a bird-like tribe of ancients. Here Nick becomes involved in a double life as he shifts back and forth between the world of things and the world of symbol. His mythical realm introduces Nick to the village’s fierce chief, Redbird; also a wily black crow, a powerful wolf-guardian and Maacla, an intriguing twin like image of himself. After a horrifying initiation, Nick, accompanied by Maacla, sets out to destroy a marauding bear, which threatens the existence of the village. Nick’s experiences as a tribal character impact his daily existence in hidden and often subtle ways. His role in the life of the village has surprising outcomes, as he engages a bigger plan, an heroic self and a larger than life destiny of legendary proportions.
